Illenium Trilogy Los Angeles Review

Illenium’s illustrious Trilogy show made its way to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles for two historic sold-out nights. Illenium debuted Trilogy at Allegiant Field in Las Vegas and then broke records at Mile High Stadium in Denver. Now, his Los Angeles stop at SoFi Stadium was the first two-day Trilogy event and it exceeded even my wildest imagination. Illenium even broke an LA record for “most lasers at a dance music concert.” It lived up to the hype!

From the vibes to the surprise guests and amazing venue production, it was an unforgettable two days. Illenium has been known for his signature stadium events and devoted fan base. He made sure to show everyone why he is still at the top of his game at the Trilogy SoFi shows.

The stage for Illenium’s first set was performed on a central island surrounded by the fans on the floor and pit. This set was for the OGs. He played his classic remixes and songs from Ashes and Awake. A highlight of Day 2 was when he brought out SLANDER and Krewella for their song “Lay it Down” and then MAX for one of the fan favorites, “Beautiful Creatures.”

Illenium’s second set was on the main stage, surrounded by fire and lasers. This set featured most of his songs from his third and fourth albums, Ascend and Fallen Embers. Another Day 2 highlight was when Illenium brought out Seven Lions to debut their new song together, “Not Even Love.” For both days this set was the hardest of the weekend, ending with the emotional and heavy “Good Things Fall Apart” vs. “Sad Songs” mashup. During this set, Illenium kicked up the bass, the pyros, and the lasers.

The third and final set was a live instrument set that brought the whole stadium to life. It featured 360-degree lasers, a giant LED wall with amazing visuals, and more pyro than you can imagine. Illenium played songs from his self-titled album Illenium and hits from his full catalog. He brought out Dabin on guitar, Said the Sky on keyboard, Annika Wells with vocals, plus live guitar and violists. The big highlight of Day 1 was when he brought out Avril Lavigne for their song “Eyes Wide Shut” and had the whole crowd going crazy.

Surprise guests were a major part of the Trilogy at SoFi. Day 1 featured MAX, Ian Dior, Alex from All Time Low, Jxdn, Avril Lavigne, Teddy Swims, Sueco, and Chris from Motionless in White. Day 2’s special guests were SLANDER, Krewella, MAX, Tori Kelly, GG Margee, Ian Dior, Seven Lions, Teddy Swims, Sueco, Trippie Redd, Alex, and Chris. It was one surprise after another, a real Hollywood affair!

By the end of the show, Illenium played about five hours of blissful bass music. With a record two straight sold-out nights at SoFi, Illenium showed the EDM world why his name is still at the top of the list. Included are the audio and video streams, and stay locked in for announcements about future dates for Trilogy 2.0!

Gem & Jam 2024 In Review: A Story Of Hope And Resiliency

The iconic Gem & Jam Festival returned to Tucson February 2 – 4, 2024 for its 16th anniversary, and the vibes were electric. The festival attracts music lovers, performers, artists, and gem lovers alike from far and wide. Among the attendees, one story stands out amid the crowd. It’s the story of Maggie and her mom, Becky, two extraordinary women whose journey to get to Gem & Jam Festival is inspiring and worth celebrating.

For Maggie, the decision to attend the festival wasn’t just about enjoying a weekend of music — it was a deliberate choice to embrace life in the face of adversity. Their shared story with music starts when Maggie was a kid. Maggie recounted that her mom, Becky, used to take her to FloydFest as a child in the Blue Ridge Mountains. As Maggie navigated through the challenges of her preteen years and the demands of life got in the way, attending festivals together became a rare occurrence, marking a 12-year hiatus in their shared musical adventures.

Sometime last year, that hiatus decidedly came to an end. Gem & Jam 2024 seemed to be the perfect weekend of music for them, and the two set out on plans to attend the festival together as mother and daughter. In October of 2023, life took an unexpected turn. Becky received a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, marking the beginning of a period of uncertainty for her and her loved ones.

Her journey has been rocky, but small glimpses of hope began to emerge when Becky began to feel better after each round of chemotherapy. Gem & Jam was something Becky and Maggie could look forward to, and it was something to keep Becky going. Maggie shared about the wonderful crafts her mom poured herself into, making totems and hoods in preparation for the festival weekend.

Gem & Jam offered a diverse array of artists to see, with genres ranging from jam bands to downtempo. While Becky has been a lifelong Dead Head and Phish fan, Maggie was able to share her love of jam bands, while also seeing electronic artists this weekend like Madhaus and TRUTH. Maggie shared that the one set that stood out for her and her mom was seeing Andy Frasco & the U.N. During their set, Andy shared that his mother was cancer-free after a 5-year battle with Leukemia. Surrounded by the magic of the festival and the crowd, it was a cathartic moment that seemed to be made just for Maggie and her mom to experience. Maggie spent the time holding her mom, an embrace that highlights the true meaning of love and togetherness.

The festival also offered unique experiences beyond the music. The live artwork, workshops, and performers were just some of the ways Gem & Jam is fully immersive as a festival. Although it feels small, one highlight of Gem & Jam is that the venue never feels crowded. My group was able to bring a cart and chairs each day.

Maggie and Becky shared they had no problem navigating the grounds with their cart as well. The pair especially enjoyed the Eternally Grateful Tent, which was an installation dedicated to memorializing friends and loved ones who have passed. Maggie recounted the experience at the installation together was serendipitous, allowing Maggie and Becky to celebrate life and memories together while reading the lyrics and poems.

Maggie and Becky’s story touches on the importance of advocating for yourself, and as Maggie shared with me, making yourself comfortable in spaces that might not always offer comfort at face value. Sometimes what matters is embracing life’s moments and finding joy even in challenging circumstances. In doing so, their story embodies the spirit of Gem & Jam, where attendees gather to celebrate life, music, and human connection.

We at Moon Lvnding are extremely grateful to have learned about Maggie and Becky’s story, and their shared love of music. We offer our heartfelt wishes for Becky to continue her fight, and for her to find moments of peace, comfort, and hope along the way.

Fairlane And Silverstein Can’t “Take It Back”

There is a saying that if you listened to emo music in high school, now you listen to EDM. Today, both of those worlds collide with Fairlane’s new track “Take It Back” featuring Shane Told of Silverstein. It is being released under Monstercat’s Uncaged imprint.

Canadian dubstep producer Fairlane has shown his emo influence on tracks before. He’s done an official remix for The Devil Wears Prada and created his own version of Yellowcard’s “Ocean Avenue.” Fellow Canadian Shane Told is no stranger to lending his voice to EDM songs. He’s previously been featured on tracks from Rezz and PhaseOne. Together they do a great job of blending both genres.

According to Fairlane, “Finishing this song with Silverstein is a milestone achievement for me. To experience such a full circle moment, collaborating with a band that quite literally shaped my taste in music as a young adult, brought me to a newfound level of appreciation for the work that I get to do. Shane [Silverstein] is so incredibly talented, and getting to see him in his element firsthand is an experience I’ll never forget. Plus, this song absolutely shreds, so that’s a bonus!”

The opening of the song could be another Silverstein song, with Told’s voice as the main focus over a simple beat and guitar melody, played by Fairlane. The chorus brings in melodic bass elements including a snappy snare that heightens the emotion behind the words being sung. Shane Told shared this about the lyrics, “At the heart of the vocals is an anti-suicide message. Having personally lost people to this tragedy, I hope it serves as a beacon to seek help before you can’t take it back.”

The breakdown is where you can really hear both genres come through. It features chugging guitars, screams, and rapid-fire snare hits before the headbang-inducing heavy dubstep elements take over. The track comes full circle, finishing with the opening guitar riff over the melodic bass beat before one last scream of “Take It Back.”

I’m personally very excited to hear more tracks that combine dance music with emo music. Stay current with what Fairlane and Silverstein have going on by using the links below. Check out the rest of the tracks that dropped this week by following Moon Lvnding’s New Music Friday Heat playlist on Spotify.

SVDDEN DEATH Drops Harbinger EP Full Of Deep And Delicious Bass

Bay-area native Danny Howland continues to put out some of the freshest, forward-thinking bass music around. From the acclaim of his VOYD soundscape and persona to the recent arrival of MELLODEATH, his groundbreaking duo project with Marshmello, Danny continues to surge in popularity with every new release. Fans at this year’s Lost Lands were left with jaws hanging as SVDDEN DEATH dropped ID . . . after ID . . . AFTER ID! No doubt the Harbinger EP is the release that opens the floodgates for a few of those tasty IDs. The ten-track, mouthwatering delivery from the bass Leviathan clocks in at just under 30 minutes. Many artists would find it difficult to pack such heavy and satisfying bass into a half-hour, but it’s SVDDEN DEATH, so of course, he pushed the boundaries.

On a steady roll-out since mid-November 2023, the now-complete Harbinger EP dropped on January 17 and included five new tracks added to the already wildly popular singles. In order, the single releases were as follows: “Harbinger,” “Don’t You Dare Go Hollow” with HVDES, “Mind Control” with Wooli, “Ten Toad Anthem,” and “Forgive Forget.” Quite a few of those first singles have already hit major streaming milestones. “Mind Control” is currently the most streamed on Spotify coming in just 24k off of 500k streams. “Don’t You Dare Go Hollow” is a close second trailing at 423k streams.

The five all-new tracks have no shortage of savory bass to sink your teeth into: “Teeth” feat. Bejalvin, “Torsion,” “Psycho,” “Yargonaut,” and “Immolator” will satisfy even the most feral basshead. “Teeth” as the EP opener brings a fresh feel to a familiar SVDDEN DEATH cadence previously heard on the instantly recognizable “Bleed” and “Behemoth,” both highly-successful and iconic tracks. Somehow, “Teeth” goes even heavier though, doubling down on industrial-style experimentation. “Torsion” with Neonix was teased as an ID under the pterodactyls at Lost Lands. Stretching and distorting frequencies battle it out through the track until it descends into tasteful, tonal hits reminiscent of early-SVDDEN DEATH releases (“Spelljam” off of his DEBUT “Spelljam EP” 2017 and “Jvnkworld” off of the “Jvnkworld EP” 2018). Neonix is known for tracks like “Spacewalk” and “Goodbye,” which can be heard within the elements of Torsion.

The title track “Harbinger” is addictive. Chalk-full of gorgeous elements throughout, one can imagine that the Ableton project file is a sight to see. It has a lot going on with zero clashing frequencies or muddy moments at all, it is truly art from a producer standpoint. The level of bass “Harbinger” delivers would definitely level a crowd. It will be a treat to hear played out live!

“Psycho” injects energy into the front half of the EP with a wild arp, almost a car-horn stab layered in, and a snappy arrangement that keeps it moving. No lack of monster-stomping bass, trills, and additional ear candy is sacrificed though. What might be used as a transition track in a set, “Psycho” is strong enough to confidently stand on its own amid the EP.

“Mind Control,” the long-awaited collab of Danny and Wooli (who were roommates for years!) is everything you want it to be: heavy, hard, an edge of drama, and a departure from anything even remotely basic. An extended break in the middle of the track re-sets the stage sonically before it winds up for the second drop, providing that extra grit to go even harder.

“Yargonaut” opens with fun, almost nostalgic, metal elements like a slamming drum kit and guitar riffs, but it doesn’t leave you in ‘expected’ for long—it drop kicks you straight into the kind of iconic bass drop SVDDEN DEATH is known for. Known as an artist who pushes the boundary and explores the evolution of entertainment, it’s possible that the name ‘yargonaut’ is inspired by YARG (Yet Another Rhythm Game), a free open-source plastic guitar game still in demo and development, but that may be bold speculation.

“Forgive Forget” pulls off an impressive feat by flawlessly crossing between many contrasting vibes. With sad boi vocals and chirpy, upbeat accents that nod back to releases with Marshmello (“Sell Out” in 2019 and “Crusade” in 2020) it is reminiscent of an older electro track, “Virus” by Martin Garrix, but resurrected after a bass baptism of course.

“Ten Toad Anthem” quickly yanks us back to brutal SVDDEN DEATH territory that we love. With ghostly, distorted vocals repeating “ten toad” this song has a more cinematic second drop featuring string instruments. Perhaps that is the reason cinematic-dubstep heavyweight, Apashe, was chosen to play direct support for SVDDEN DEATH’s Vegas show March 29 (tickets HERE). Either way, it artfully segways the vibe to the collab featuring HVDES vocals, “Don’t You Dare Go Hollow.” HVDES’ hushed and haunting vocals lay over a brutal bass track, leaving the feeling of an ‘anthem’ in your bones. On social media, SVDDEN DEATH explained the song, “is a reminder that it is always our choice who we are, and that pain is an inevitable part of life but to allow that to take the parts of us that make us human is to allow collective suffering to win.” This tune is sure to be a fan favorite on the charts and in his sets.

Closing out the EP, we have “Immolator.” Defined as “1. : to kill or destroy especially by fire. 2. : to offer in sacrifice. especially : to kill as a sacrificial victim.” This could not be more on-brand for Danny. Snappy leads with diverse, dancing, bass elements land nicely in bouncing drops. Vocals whispering “set fire to the world, set fire to my body… set fire to the dust that remains,” are classic SVDDEN DEATH-vibes from his world of VOYD that fans will welcome as a strong finish to the Harbinger EP that they didn’t want to end.

Upcoming appearances include a B2B with Excision February 4 at the sold-out Thunderdome, an EDC Mexico appearance February 24, and two shows in Honolulu March 15 and 16, before the incredible billing of acts at his headlining Vegas show in March. MELLODEATH, the deadly SVDDEN DEATH x Marshmello concept, officially kicks off its four-city tour April 4 in Denver (you already know it’s at Red Rocks), followed by Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas. A limited number of MELLODEATH pre-sale tickets go on sale Thursday, January 25 at 10 am PST. Having been blown away by their phenomenal B2B at EDCLV 2023 with the incredible visuals, mixing, and stage presence of two legends—this is a must-see tour.

Curbi Comes Correct With Pulse-Pounding New Single “Kill The Lights”

From smash hit originals to remixes for some of the biggest tastemakers in the industry, and even performances around the biggest stages in the world, Curbi has made his mark in the EDM scene. Now he brings his talents into 2024 with his new single, “Kill The Lights,” a groovy stutter house anthem with vocals from Sarah de Warren.

“Kill The Lights” opens with a repeating 16th note chord progression which persists throughout the track. This offers a sense of familiarity, bringing the listener from start to finish in an entrancing fashion. As Curbi adds more elements, they play off each other to push and pull the energy from hypnotic to lively. Sarah de Warren’s airy vocal is a perfect pairing with the dark and pumping tendencies of the song.

As “Kill The Lights” progresses, Curbi introduces a low Reese bass to add energy before dropping into a thumping drum-propelled drop. With plenty of energy to get you grooving in your seat, this track is perfect for both easy listening and getting down at a live show. The combination of Curbi’s production prowess with Sarah de Warren’s evocative voice and emotional songwriting makes “Kill The Lights” a song we expect to hear across a variety of mediums. Chris Lake Elevates The Chemical Brothers’ “No Reason” With Remix Masterpiece

Chris Lake has done it again, taking the music world by storm last week with his latest remix of The Chemical Brothers‘ groove-infused track, “No Reason.” Released by EMI / Virgin Records, this remix follows the success of two other official “No Reason” remixes by Ewan McVicar and O’Flynn. The original track, a highlight of The Chemical Brothers’ recent album For That Beautiful Feeling, now receives the Chris Lake treatment, promising a new level of dance floor euphoria.

For those unfamiliar with Lake’s remix repertoire, a glance at his versions of “Dummy” by Portugal. The Man and “Who Are You?” by Maine will set high expectations. And true to form, Chris Lake delivers spectacularly, harnessing the infectious bassline of “No Reason” and elevating it with his signature style.

Lake’s expertise shines in building immense anticipation before each drop. The track benefits from three distinct yet flawlessly executed pre-drop builds, each leading into a uniquely funky kick and bass combo. These elements maintain thematic cohesion with the original while injecting a fresh, exhilarating energy. The first and last drops are particularly noteworthy, where the bass seamlessly glides into purely ecstatic moments.

Chris Lake will be on a bit of a hiatus, with no scheduled dates until the Ultra Music Festival in March. To keep up with all the latest news from Chris Lake, connect through his social links below.

Ravenscoon Rocks Webster Hall To Close The Periphery Tour 2023

Ravenscoon wrapped up his Periphery Tour 2023 with stops in New York City on Friday, December 8, and Milwaukee on Saturday, December 9. By his own admission, the show at the historic Webster Hall in NYC was his largest headline show to date, and his stellar lineup matched the occasion. Moon Lvnding was on the scene from open to close, witnessing excellent sets from Green Matter, DRINKURWATER, EAZYBAKED, Ravenscoon, and Meduso.

The Denver-based artist Green Matter made her NYC debut to start the night in style. The 2022 Excision Bass Music Initiative winner showed off her production skills, mixing the nostalgia of early dubstep and the innovation of modern bass. It is always a treat to see someone making their NYC debut, and she excelled at the opportunity!

DRINKURWATER production graphics

The German-born, Phoenix-based producer DRINKURWATER followed Green Matter and kept the vibes high. His set had a bunch of range to it, from heavy riddim to melodic dubstep. The crowd also got into his set, with several mosh pits breaking out during his short 45 minutes on stage. From what I could see, it was the most wholesome, respectful, and considerate moshpit I’ve seen in quite some time. The fans loved the tunes and stayed hydrated throughout the set!

EAZYBAKED came on next for an hour-long set before the headliner, and they did their best to captivate the NYC crowd. After two action-packed sets to start the night, the energy of the crowd was a bit down for this set. But the vibes also fit the more downtempo bass music from the EAZYBAKED duo. They stayed true to their roots and brought a taste of the EDM underground to the Big Apple.

Finally, the main man Ravenscoon took the stage and immediately commanded the attention of the crowd. His new production graphics looked great, as seen above, and complemented his music well. He seamlessly mixed between experimental downtempo and upbeat dubstep. He played many of the songs on his new album, which was released a week prior on December 1, and dropped fresh and tasty remixes as well.

This was my first time catching Ravenscoon live, and I was impressed with his poise and quality. He ended his nearly two-hour set with a heartfelt message to the crowd about being true to yourself and doing what you love, which was a nice way to cap off his largest headline show. Although the tour had one show left in Milwaukee on Saturday, there was a touch of catharsis to his words and it came through genuinely.

Meduso production graphics
Meduso // Photo Credit: @samwolloch

I left the show equally impressed with Meduso, who did a great job engaging the crowd and keeping many bass heads around for the last 45 minutes of the show from 3:15 to 4 am. It is never an easy task to come on as the closer after the headliner leaves the stage, and Meduso’s music did the trick. The Los Angeles-based producer dipped into his bag of tricks with rock-infused remixes and energetic bass to captivate the crowd until close. This is another artist I got to see for the first time and had me staying until the very end.

As mentioned previously, Ravenscoon’s masterpiece of an album was fully released on December 1 and it is an impressive body of work. With 18 tracks and over an hour of bass music, there is something in it for all types of bass heads. There’s also a wide range of collaborative artists on the album, with 11 songs featuring one or more other producers. A few of the songs that stood out to me are “Out Cold,” “Dissolve,” and “Wild.”

Ravenscoon recently announced an even bigger production for 2024, one-upping his show at Webster Hall with two days scheduled at Denver’s iconic Ogden Theater on March 8 and 9. He will also play as support on select dates of Liquid Stranger’s EXPANSION Tour in Spring 2024. To keep up with all the latest news and music from Ravenscoon, use the handy links below.
