Aluna’s Noir Fever Spreads As The Metro Stays Bouncing

Noir Fever, the new record label from renowned singer, producer, and dance music icon Aluna, has turned up the heat with a few notable releases over the last few weeks. On June 14, the brother-sister duo Pitch Black from Long Beach, CA, debuted its first-ever song, “Metro,” on the UK label. A week prior, Harlem-based DJ/producer AQUTIE dropped a 2-track EP, Coolest in the City, showcasing her star potential in the NYC house scene.

Aluna founded Noir Fever to foster the growth of emerging talent by focusing on Black women and queer artist communities. With Pitch Black’s viral TikTok presence and engaging musical production, “Metro” is just the start of something big. “We aren’t just about jumping on the train that’s already speeding ahead,” Aluna said on discovering Pitch Black via Instagram. “We want to invest in artists we believe in, even if it’s their first official release. ‘Metro’ is undeniably hard, and I’m so glad it’s releasing on Noir Fever.”

AQUTIE is another Noir Fever artist poised to make waves, hailing from the dance music mecca of New York City. She combines her African and Caribbean roots to create an innovative new sound for sexy house music, including powerful vocals by Paulina Singer. “It’s really an ode to being an African New Yorker,” AQUTIE remarked on the release. “The EP is inspired by many instruments you’d hear from my African background.”

While performing on some of the world’s finest club stages from Bali to NYC, AQUTIE also continues running her own Brooklyn-based event series, Heat House. “Her production, just like her sets, are hard, sexy, tasteful, and fresh all at the same time,” Aluna shared. “She has an incredibly broad sensibility and she blends her influences seamlessly. I’m so glad the world gets to hear these tracks…”

This is just the start of bigger things from Noir Fever, as it makes good on Aluna’s famous letter calling out the dance music industry for more inclusion of Black artists. From what we can hear, Noir Fever is already making a difference while partnering with events company Empire to help with bookings. Subtronics Releases “Sploinky Dub”

About a month ago, on May 4, 2024, Tiktok creator @grechofficial made a quick post in his car. He remarked about the person next to him “Listening to some sploinky ass music and was making him feel weird.” Who would’ve thought the sample would lead to an EDM single?

To no surprise, bassheads saw the Tiktok and sent it to their favorite producers. Inevitably, the modern master of deep-cut meme samples and one of the sploinkiest of them all, Subtronics got a hold of the video. Subtronics might have been the ideal bass artist to create a dubstep track from this viral video. He’s got a knack for giving the people what they want!

Subtronics has been staying busy this spring, playing mainstage at EDC Las Vegas, throwing the 4th annual Cyclops Rocks with two sold-out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheater, and headlining Forbidden Kingdom. Amazingly, he has made the time to produce and release “Sploinky Dub” featuring Grech. Subtronics and Grech understood the assignment and sploinky is the latest term to enter the EDM lexicon. Whatever weird womps and wubs you think of when describing bass music is precisely what it means to listen to sploinky music.

@Grechofficial went to TikTok recently and said, “I never thought the person in the car next to me listening to some sploinky ass music would have the impact on the EDM community that it did, but I just want to say I appreciate you for embracing the sploink. We have something very interesting coming up for you guys. I’m sure it’ll make you feel weird in all the right ways.”

Grab your pashminas and bucket hats and get ready for the sploinkiest of tunes. Subtronics has a packed schedule this summer including a handful of festival appearances including Electric Forest, HARD Summer, Elements, North Coast, S2O NY, Lost Lands and more. Now everyone can get sploinky, with the new tune streaming platforms and right at the top of our weekly New Music Friday playlist

Pride Month Spotlights: REZZ & AK Renny

As we begin Pride Month celebrations, we are excited to highlight two exceptional artists who are making waves in the dance music scene and proudly representing the LGBTQ+ community. Each week, we will feature influential LGBTQ+ artists, and for our first week, we want to highlight two talents: REZZ and AK Renny. These artists are not only redefining genres with their innovative sounds but also breaking barriers and creating space for greater representation in the industry.

Since beginning her career, REZZ has achieved incredible success, earning tens of millions of streams, selling out iconic venues like Red Rocks, headlining major festivals worldwide, and appearing on the cover of Billboard. REZZ is renowned for her unique sound that blends bass-heavy and minimal tech compositions, producing genre-defying electronic music. REZZ’s journey began when she was a teenager as a local DJ in Niagara Falls, Ontario, before her distinct sound caught the attention of industry heavyweights like deadmau5 and Skrillex. This led to the release of her debut EP, Insurrection, in 2015.

REZZ’s androgynous style—often featuring an all-black ensemble, ponytail, black hat, and iconic goggles—challenges traditional gender norms and underscores the importance of female representation in the male-dominated electronic music scene. By creating a space for herself, REZZ has also paved the way for other women and LGBTQ+ artists to shine in the industry.

AK Renny, a DJ and rapper from Jacksonville, Florida, is transforming the bass house scene with her distinct sound, that seamlessly merges the energetic beats of bass house with her powerful rap lyrics. The name AK Renny, an acronym for “Always Knew Renny,” is inspired by a Kid Cudi quote, capturing her journey towards self-awareness and artistic growth. As a proud LGBTQ+ artist, AK Renny often incorporates LGBTQ+ themes and her own identity into her lyrics establishing herself as a significant figure within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the house and rap genres.

Since beginning her production career in 2019, AK Renny has rapidly gained recognition and support from key industry figures such as Dr. Fresch. She has released tracks with well-known labels like Solotoko, Night Bass, and House Call, and has upcoming collaborations with Hood Politics, Ferris Wheel, and Bassrush. AK Renny will be making her debut at both Nocturnal Wonderland and Lost Lands this year, further cementing her rising status in the electronic music scene. Additionally, she has a track with Heyz titled “Feel Right” set to release this Friday, June 7.

Ray Volpe Has Your Next “Song Request”

Ray Volpe has made a name for himself over the past two years with his ever-present breakout hit “Laserbeam” and his frequent touring support with Excision. Volpe continues adding to his impressive catalog and displays his sonic range with his new bass house track, “Song Request.”

“Song Request” showcases Volpe’s versatility as a producer, blending bass house and dubstep effortlessly. His ability to create powerful drops and catchy vocals in a stage-ready single has caught the attention of bass tastemakers like Excision, DIESEL, Dr. Fresch, Steve Aoki, and more.

“I thought of the entire song idea in the shower,” said Ray Volpe. “I was literally washing my hair and started thinking about that ‘baaa daa daaa’ melody. It immediately felt catchy to me. ‘Song Request’ really captures that rave experience where you, your friends, and everyone around you are shouting the song together, while connecting over that moment in time.”

Volpe has been playing in support for Excision on his North American Nexus Tour and will be busy making festival appearances all summer long, starting with Beyond Wonderland Chicago and Forbidden Kingdom before heading to Europe for Parookaville and Tomorrowland. No Mana Unveils Reifying Album ‘I Contain Flashing Images’

Known for his mastery of electro-house and video game-inspired sounds, No Mana is no stranger to the dance music world. From working with some of the biggest artists in the game to performing at the most prestigious events, we’ve come to expect a certain caliber from him—I Contain Flashing Images has shattered these standards. The 15-track LP embodies the No Mana brand, delivering one of the best albums in recent memory.

I Contain Flashing Images opens with a namesake PSA, warning listeners of the content they are about to consume. No Mana unapologetically owns the scintillating stigma of his occupational hazards, standing firmly on his identity as an artist. He notes:

“The name ‘I Contain Flashing Images’ came from when I had been asked to put a warning frame at the start of my videos. After doing animation for teasers, YouTube visualizers, concert visuals and even some for other performing artists, flashing images was like this mandatory element in order to fully represent the excitement of the music or whatever context it was in. I wasn’t just going to slap a warning label on every single visual I do. Instead, I decided to make it an album, and now a part of my brand forever. Now no one can say I didn’t tell them so. I make uncomfortable visuals. My brand is now a warning sign for it.”

Each track on I Contain Flashing Images adds a meaningful piece to the larger body of work. The 8-bit infused “Solarpunk” sets the stage for the type of instrumentation throughout the album, while “Everlasting” showcases the prevalent lyricism and storytelling. Some tracks focus on that traditional electro grit, while others pay homage to the analog sounds of the past. Every song has its own identity yet supports the overall composition.

I Contain Flashing Images is a masterclass in evocation and identity. No Mana brings the listener back to a place of nostalgia while also keeping the sound fresh and modern. By recontextualizing classic video game sounds and electro themes, he has delivered a prodigious product that will continue to push his artistic prowess into the light. His eponymous tour begins June 7th, with tickets available here. Be sure to connect with No Mana and listen to I Contain Flashing Images using the links below!
