Day Trip chose the perfect day to bring its all-day block party back to Denver. The weather could not have been better for a day spent outside dancing. It was warm without being overwhelmingly hot, plenty of sunshine, a light breeze, and just enough cloud cover. Most importantly, no rain in the forecast.
As you walked up to the Junkyard, you could hear the unmistakable “boots and cats” of house music echoing through the surrounding blacktop and concrete. Once inside, the familiar Day Trip neon sign illuminated the stage, with a gigantic disco ball hanging above it and greenery in front of the DJ booth.
The event started early in the afternoon; the crowd steadily grew as the day went on. By the time the night was winding down, the space was packed, but it never felt so crowded that you couldn’t dance. There were VIP decks on either side of the stage, along with viewing areas on stage that gave attendees plenty of ways to take in the performances. At the bar, people could cool off with one of Day Trip’s signature fish bowl margaritas.
LP Giobbi brought the perfect Day Trip soundtrack. The creator of Femme House delivered a vibey, danceable set. It moved through disco, Afro house, and some nostalgic old-school tracks. Her energy was just as infectious as the music. Dressed in a flowy outfit, she spent much of her set dancing behind the decks.
Once Zhu took the stage, the atmosphere changed almost instantly. The bright, carefree energy of the afternoon gave way to something darker. Red lights washed over the crowd as the bassline began to pulse through the Junkyard. Zhu’s set leaned more heavily into techno and tech house, creating a completely different atmosphere while still keeping the crowd moving.
His set spanned his career, giving longtime fans plenty to recognize while showcasing music from his latest release, Black Midas. He moved between older tracks and newer material, including “Working For It,” fan favorite “Risky Business,” and the newer “5STARRR.” Zhu also stepped away from the decks and on top of the booth to sing live during “In The Morning.” This added a live element and elevated his performance above a regular DJ set. By the end of the night, there was nowhere left to go but out with a bang. Zhu closed the block party with “Faded,” sending the crowd into the final moments of the night with his most recognizable track.
From dancing in the afternoon sun to watching the entire atmosphere transform under red lights after dark, it was a full-day celebration of everything that makes Day Trip special.
