Halftime music is the lifeblood of the underground bass music community nowadays, and the subgenre lends itself to incredible amounts of variety and experimentation. Subtle and Lavier’s newest single “Watch This,” out now via WTF’s That Sound, lives up to this, while pulling influence from hip-hop and delivering gut-punching bass.
The track begins with a cryptic alarm. A topline melody reminiscent of a 90’s hip hop track takes over. The groovy bassline moves in quickly, employing a similar melody to that of the intro while being punctuated with several high-end riffs and FX. The bassline sounds similar to that of a bass guitar itself, but with outstanding processing.
Subtle has been making waves in the underground recently, bursting onto the scene with his acclaimed single “Self-Loathing In Columbus.” Signed to Wavecraft Collective, his most recent single “Snakes” came on their Book Of Shadows compilation series.
Lavier has come out swinging in 2022, releasing “Fever” back in January and following it up with his aptly titled downtempo track “Another One.” Coming from a musical background, Lavier says he enjoys songwriting itself just as much as producing. While mixing and mastering his own tracks, he is also a very talented visual artist who has worked with numerous artists and agencies in the industry.
