With his sixth release in 2022, Quix continues to maintain his momentum. Having recently dropped “Enter With Caution (feat. Alix Robson)” and “Pompeii (feat. Crooked Bangs)” as a collab with Cyclops — both on Dim Mak — the trap leviathan and hybrid-bass pioneer returns yet again.
Quix has made his mark in the scene with bangers like “Heads or Tails,” and his explosive remix of “Creep On Me (feat. French Montana)” originally by GASHI, French Montana, and DJ Snake has racked up over 22 million plays on Spotify. Quix originally came to America in 2017 for just 10 shows, yet he stayed to play an incredible 42. He has played at Coachella, Ultra, and EDC. In particular, his collab with close friend Alison Wonderland, “Time” pushed the bounds of what bass music can be. Additionally, he has worked with fellow trap producer Vincent as the duo TIGERDROOL, delivering the festival-pleaser “SABER TOOTH.”
Quix’s fresh release “Take My Breath Away” is precisely what one wants out of a crispy-clean, inventive track — one highly sought after by fans as an ID teased on Instagram a year ago. He crafted a perfect mix of sparkly bright and gritty hard elements. It’s going to be insanely hype-building in a show set with its banger-yet-ballad vibe. It’s truly difficult to draw any sonic similarities to other existing songs. Maybe if “I Wanna Know” by RL Grime was made a bit heavier or if “Babylon (feat. Denzel Curry) – Skrillex & Ronny J Remix” was scaled back with female vocals and a softer vibe, then one might come close to “Take My Breath Away.”
The haunting vocals of Linney open the track, quickly followed by bass production sneaking in as the verse bleeds into the pre-drop. Mixing bass elements and trap, Quix hits upon something exceptionally delightful. The hint of wild arpeggiators appears early on, but they truly take full sonic form in the drop paired with plenty of classic wonks and wubs for bassheads. The arpeggiator elements have such an interesting sound design that they sound like guitar strings if one had dragged the pick up the length of them, accelerated them, and bumped them up an octave or two.
The splash of tonally bright elements contrasts with wubs to make for an awesome showcase of just how forward-thinking Quix has become with hybrid bass. Linney’s breathy vocals in the breakdown and outro add to the overall dimension and drama of the track. The panning synths of the breakdown specifically create just a second of a breath before being launched full-scale into the drop for the second time. With “Take My Breath Away” having both bright and dark elements, it makes for an absolutely satisfying track on so many levels. For those looking to hear a dazzling, beastly track, add this to a favorite playlist immediately!
Paired with a stunning visualizer on YouTube, Quix really knows how to premier a much-anticipated track. Most recently having headlined the 4-day fest Deep Hard N Funky in Aukland, New Zealand, here’s to hoping Quix returns to international touring soon! But for now, fans can just wait for the return while he enjoys being a dad for a little bit longer having welcome his second child, a daughter, in March 2022.
