Preventing Phone Theft 101

As fall festival season kicks into high gear, the unfortunate reality is that phone theft is on the rise. Over the years, we’ve witnessed daring thieves with backpacks filled to the brim with stolen phones at events like Lollapalooza, Lost Lands, and Afterlife Los Angeles. These phonejackers are becoming increasingly clever and audacious, which means it’s time to step up our game in protecting our personal belongings. We have some tips and product recommendations to keep your cell phone dialed in.

Clean Out Those Pockets

This should be a no-brainer — they don’t call them pickpockets for nothing. Leaving your valuables in open pockets can often end in disaster. It’s too easy for someone to slide by in the crowd while you’re busy dancing and slip your device right out of your pocket, and by the time you realize, they’ve already moved on to someone else. Zipper pockets are a safer way to keep your items secure, but stay vigilant as someone could still try to unzip them.

Hydrate and Protect

Anti-theft hydration packs have been on the rise, and for great reason. Brands like Gen-Z and Lunchbox carry some awesome bags that have secret pockets to keep your goodies good. These pockets are strategically positioned against your back, requiring you to physically remove the bag to access your valuables. This makes it virtually impossible for a would-be thief to sneak by, unzip, and snoop. You’ll feel safe and secure all night — and stay hydrated as well!

Tethered Together

We spend so much time on our phones these days that we might as well make them an extension of our body! Phone lanyards are a killer solution to combating theft. You simply insert the tab into your case with the loop sticking out of your charging port, clip on the lanyard, and you’re ready to go! Just a quick Google or Amazon search for “Phone Lanyard” will show you hundreds of options for fun, colorful lanyards that make your phone an extension of you. Our lanyard of choice is extendable and can be made long enough to comfortably sit around your neck while your phone is stashed in a fanny pack so that you can live in the moment. The clips are strong and secure, leaving a potential thief fumbling if they try to undo them. Can’t run away with your phone if it’s literally attached to you!

Come In Clutch

Recently introduced Clutch Loops are another way to physically attach a phone to one’s person. These carabiner-style fasteners can connect to your hydro pack or fanny pack strap and clip to your phone just like a phone lanyard. The steel cables are cut-proof and retractable, so even if you drop your phone, it will snap right back up. There are tons of fun styles available, and anyone can find one that matches their vibe.

If You See Something, Say Something

Remember, it is on us to keep each other safe. Report any suspicious activity to security or ground control, and remind your friends to secure their belongings. Stay safe, and have fun!
