Based on a series of tweets from John Summit this afternoon, his Off The Grid Records dance music label is in jeopardy of a trademark lawsuit.
During Miami Music Week in 2022, John Summit and his team at Metatone officially launched Off The Grid Records, which has featured the likes of John Summit, Kyle Walker, Deeper Purpose, Max Styler, and Lucati. What’s unique about Summit’s label is it also takes the show on the road, hosting events at locations like Petco Park in San Diego or The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee which was an underground camping event that, quite literally, was off the grid.
John Summit and his team have built the label around a group of people who all came together with a common goal of growing the dance community and hosting events in fun, unique places. Summit says he will “REFUSE to get threatened for 7+ figures over a LABEL NAME when the entire worth of OFF THE GRID has been built thru people: my team, the artists, and the incredible community we’ve built… in the end the name means nothing, the people is what matters and we ain’t goin nowhere.”
The immediate effect? The promoter, Off The Grid Campout has suffered a slew of harassing messages from John Summit fans. These unwelcome comments and DMs have made it so that Off The Grid Campout has set their social media pages private since the original backlash from the John Summit tweet.
More updates to follow as this story unfolds.
Update 2:30pm PDT
The event promoter has responded with this Facebook post addressing the tweets from John Summit. Additionally, we’ve had several members of the community reach out expressing how sad they are for the promoter. From the first glance and hearing some responses from community members, it appears that Off The Grid Campout has built a really great community around their brand.
