Some things are so complementary they’re meant to go together. Peanut butter and jelly. Macaroni and cheese. Chicken and waffles. And now, Sully and SuperAve. These two artists are some of the premier talents in the bass music scene currently; both are coming off their own smashing EP releases in 2021.
Interflow is these artists’ best work to-date. The two tracks represent a perfect blend of the artists’ sounds, delivering gut-punching bass and crisp hip-hop beats.
SuperAve.
“Mug” is this tag team’s walkout song. A mellow guitar melody quickly gives way to vocal samples and rising synths that build lots of tension before the drop. The drop features punchy drums and powerfully crisp bass synths that give the track its rhythm. Background high-end FX reminiscent of classic hip-hop synths occasionally line the drops as well.
Sully and SuperAve. did not “Slip Up” on their second collab. Similar to “Mug,” “Slip Up” features powerful sustained bass synths and steady percussion. This track does rely more on its melodies, as several different topline melodies perfectly complement the energetic bassline. This track does employ a more traditional kick-snare dubstep drum pattern rather than a hip hop or trap beat. These two artists have expertly blended stellar sound design with traditional hip-hop elements to create two incredibly fresh tunes that we will be hearing on sound systems for years to come.
Sully
Sully has grown into one of the staples on Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan label, recently releasing his Malfunction EP on the imprint before a large run of shows with PEEKABOO this fall. SuperAve. was unknown to many in the scene prior to 2021, but made a name for himself with his debut EP The Streets Hear Everything, released on Deadbeats. That EP is my personal favorite and most played of 2021. The enigmatic, mask-donning producer has garnered lots of attention for his producing prowess, as he toes the line between bass music and hip-hop with incredibly crisp mixdowns.
